Since 1961, the B’nai Havurah community has been part of the Jewish Reconstructionist Movement. B'nai Havurah's diverse participants come from all walks of life and demographics, and share similar values and the belief that Judaism is an evolving civilization encompassing history, literature, art, music, land, and language. The B'nai Havurah community is committed to acts of kindness, social justice, and connection with the Jewish people. B’nai Havurah is participatory, focused on equality for all people, and welcomes a variety of perspectives and forms of religious expression. Since their inception, B'nai Havurah has been dedicated to invigorating Judaism with innovative forms of study, worship and celebration based upon progressive Jewish theology.
The friendship between Central Christian and congregation B’nai Havurah is something that Central has much appreciated over the past many years. Established on the friendship between Pastor Canaan Harris and Rabbi Evette Luttman, for the past five years Central has partnered with B’nai in several different initiatives. For instance, each year we welcome B’nai Havurah to hold their High Holy Days (Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur) in our sanctuary. What’s more, we find a couple of occasions each year to hold combined services and fellowship events between our two congregations: for example, for the past several years we’ve sponsored a Tu B’Shavat Seder inviting members from Central to join with members from B’nai for a special service of teaching and fellowship. We are thankful for the relationship between our two faith communities and keep Rabbi Evette and B’nai Havurah in our daily prayers!
